Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Joint Programme

The Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL JP) is a European R&D programme forstering innovative product and services for older people. Meaningful usage of information and communication technologies can improve the quality of life of older people by giving them safety and comfort to stay longer at home.

The AAL JP was set up by 23 European member states and the European Commission based on article 168 of Treaty. The projects follow national funding rules in Austria according to the thematic programme benefit. The programme management for the Austrian partners is done by the FFG.

For administration the AAL Association under Belgium Law was founded on 19.9.2007 by the member states. The duration will be 2008-2013. The annual calls provide a budget of ca. 50 million Euro For Austrian partners 5 million Euro are spent, of which 2,5 million Euro are national budget from the BMVIT plus a portion of 40-50% from the AAL Association. Funded R&D project consists of a consortium of at least 3 partners from 3 different members states. At least one in the consortium has to be a company.

After a national pre-check of the eligibility criteria an international jury evaluates the proposals.

  • The 1. call topic 2008 was "ICT based solutions for Prevention and Management of Chronic Conditions of Elderly People".
  • The 2. call 2009 focused on "ICT based solutions for Advancement of Social Interaction of Elderly People".
  • The 3. call will open 2010.
