The Supreme Civil Aviation Authority comprises the following divisions
- II/L1, Aviation Law and Air Safety,
- II/L2, Aviation Relations,
- II/L3, Airports, Flight Operations and Technology and
- II/PMV, Project Management for Airport Procedures.

Tasks of the Supreme Civil Aviation Authority
Tasks handled by the Supreme Civil Aviation Authority include the following (brief excerpt from its range of activities):
- specific issues of aviation law (cases brought against aviation authorities in the courts of first instance);
- regulation of air transport including regulation of air safety operations;
- aviation personnel matters (legal aspects of civil aviation staff regulations including general training, tests and examinations);

legal issues of compliance with the rules of
- EASA (European Aviation Safety Authority),
- JAA (Joint Aviation Authorities) and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation),
- and with European Union rules of relevance to aviation;
- international aviation relations, particularly with the multilateral bodies ICAO and ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference);
- conduct of bilateral negotiations on aviation;
- conclusion of aviation agreements;
- basic planning of international scheduled passenger and occasional transport services;
- supervision of operations and safety through Austro Control GmbH and the Austrian Aeroclub as required by § 141 of the Aviation Act (LFG) (e.g. those of its responsibilities which are delegated to the Austrian Aeroclub);
- procedures under § 140 b of the Aviation Act (e.g. inspection responsibilities delegated to maintenance organisations);
- drafting of air transport legislation;
- in-flight safety and security measures against illegal acts;
- aviation security matters;
- supervision of airport safety and security;
- bans on air traffic inside safety exclusion zones;
- administrative procedures relating to airports and security systems, including monitoring of their operation and safety.
