On 2 December 2008 Doris Bures was sworn in as Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology by the Austrian president Dr. Heinz Fischer .

Doris Bures is the nineteenth Federal Minister for Transport in the Second Austrian Republic (after 1945).

Austrian Road Safety Programme 2011-2020

The Austrian Federal Government, in particular the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) as the main government body responsible for road safety, have set themselves the target of making Austria's roads among the safest in the European Union (EU).

Significant progress has already been achieved throught the first Austrian Road Safety Programme (2002-2010), but road safety figures for Austria are still only average for the EU as a whole, and even below average for the EU-15 countries. As a result, bmvit has worked in close cooperation with the members of the Austrian Road Safety Advisory Council's Roads Task Force to develop a new Road Safety Programme for the years 2011-2020.

The Commission decision 2009/750/EC on the “definition of the European electronic toll service and its elements” that has regard to the European Union (EU) directive 2004/52/EC on the “interoperability of electronic toll systems in the Community” and went into force 8 October 2009 is based on the goal that in future vehicles using toll roads within the EU territory will need only one single On-Board-Unit and one single contract for toll payment.
